How Often Should an Oil Furnace Be Serviced?

Once a year, every year. Oil burns with more soot than natural gas, so an oil furnace or oil boiler that skips a season loses efficiency fast and is far more likely to lock out on a cold night. The best time to book is late summer or early fall, before the heating season starts and before service calendars fill up.

Some systems need more than one visit. Older burners, homes that run the heat hard, and systems that have had soot or puffback problems may need a mid-season check. Commercial oil heat usually runs on a set service schedule. Either way, the nozzle and oil filter should be replaced at every annual oil heater tune-up.

Thermostat and Controls: The First Item on the Checklist

If your oil heat doesn’t respond to the thermostat, short cycles, or never reaches the set temperature, the cause is often in the controls rather than the burner. • Oil filter and pump strainer: replaced or cleaned so sludge doesn’t starve the burner.
• Electrodes: cleaned, gapped, and checked for reliable ignition.
• Combustion test: smoke, draft, stack temperature, and efficiency readings, then burner adjustment.
• Pump pressure and cutoff: checked so oil doesn’t drip into the chamber after shutdown.
• Primary control and cad cell: tested so the burner shuts off if the flame doesn’t light.

Chamber, Heat Exchanger, and Flue Check

Soot insulates the heat exchanger, so more of your oil goes up the chimney instead of into the house. During service we vacuum the combustion chamber, brush the heat exchanger passages, and inspect the smoke pipe, barometric damper, and chimney base for blockages or leaks.

• Visible piping and fittings checked for leaks and corrosion
