Yellow or Orange Flame?
A healthy gas flame is blue. Yellow or orange can mean carbon monoxide. Shut the boiler off and call us right away.
No heat or cold radiators. On a hot-water system, the usual causes are a failed circulator pump, a stuck zone valve, a bad aquastat or thermostat, or air trapped in the lines. On steam, it’s often low water, a tripped low-water cutoff, or clogged radiator vents.
Short cycling. A boiler that fires and shuts off every few minutes may have a bad limit control or aquastat, low water, a pressuretrol set wrong on a steam boiler, or a boiler that’s too big for the house. It wastes fuel and wears out parts.
Leaks or rust. Water at the relief valve often means pressure is running too high, usually from a waterlogged expansion tank or a failing fill valve. Leaks at fittings and valves are a simple repair. Rust streaks or water coming from the boiler itself can mean a cracked section.
Pressure keeps dropping. On a hot-water boiler the gauge should hold steady in its normal range, typically around 12 to 25 psi depending on water temperature. A gauge that keeps falling points to a leak in the system, a bad fill valve, or an expansion tank problem.
Banging or kettling. Kettling, a rumble like a kettle about to boil, comes from scale on the heat exchanger. Banging in steam pipes is usually water hammer from trapped water or pipes that have lost their pitch.
Won’t light. On gas boilers, the usual suspects are the ignitor, flame sensor, thermocouple, or gas valve. On oil boilers, a clogged nozzle or fuel filter, a weak fuel pump, or a dirty cad cell will lock the burner out.
Error codes or lockouts. Modern boilers log fault codes. Our technicians read them, find the cause behind the code, and fix that, so the lockout doesn’t come back next week.
Rising fuel bills. Soot on the heat exchanger, scale inside it, or poor combustion makes the boiler burn more fuel for the same heat. A combustion test shows how much you’re losing.
Yellow or orange flame. A healthy gas flame is blue. Yellow or orange means incomplete combustion, which can produce carbon monoxide. Shut the boiler off and call us right away.
