Start Outside: Clear the Outdoor Unit
If you run a heat pump, clear leaves, grass, and debris from around it so air moves freely and the unit does not overheat or ice up. If you have a separate AC condenser you will not use this winter, clear debris around it and cover the top to protect it from snow and ice. Keep vegetation cut back at least a couple of feet on all sides.
